E’ con estrema tristezza che ho appreso del tragico evento dello scorso weekend. Fran Crippen è morto facendo quello che amava, durante una competizione in acque libere negli Emirati Arabi. Anche scriverlo sembra davvero surreale. Le circostanze della morte di Fran sono ancora poco chiare, ma quel che appare chiarissimo è l’incredibile fatto che non ci si sia accorti subito di quello che è accaduto. C’è stata anche una ricerca del corpo che era disperso ed è stato trovato ore dopo vicino alla boa dell’arrivo…. Questo può significare che Crippen è stato lasciato completamente solo in acqua, senza scorte né barche di salvataggio che avessero sott’occhio quel tratto di mare dove probabilmente è successo l’irreparabile.
Resta difficile anche credere alle supposizioni che rimproverano a Crippen di essersi sottoposto a uno “sforzo eccessivo” (sopratutto trattandosi di un atleta che per lavoro è sotto sforzo eccessivo…)
I funerali di Fran si sono tenuti domenica a Philadelphia. Molte pagine di Facebook lo ricordano… e anche io non credo potrò fare a meno di dedicargli un pensiero la prossima volta che mi troverò a partecipare a una competizione in acque libere, e credo mi verrà spontaneo dedicargli qualche bracciata….
It’s with extreme sadness that we learned of the tragic event that took place overseas this past weekend. Fran Crippen died doing what he loved, competing in an open water race in the United Arab Emirates. Even writing those words seems utterly surreal, and trying to come to grips with the reality becomes very difficult as the days tick by. While the circumstances surrounding Fran’s death are still unclear, what is absolutely clear is the unbelievable fact that Fran was left completely alone in the water with no safety boat or escort.
It’s getting harder and harder to control the anger that’s slowly building, and I’m very skeptical of reports that are blaming Fran’s “over exertion” (from an athlete that spent his life over exerting), I’ll let you be the judge by providing this link. Fran made such an incredible impact on not just the sport of swimming, but on people he came into contact with in all walks of life. He was a very special person who will certainly be missed by many people, but no one more than his Mom, Dad, and sisters. I’ve posted some clips from Fran’s video on the site, and hope you’ll spend some time listening to his interviews. You’ll discover what a wonderfully humble, committed, and fun young man he was.
